I just found this excellent Google Tech Talk by Scott Berkun on the myths of innovation. I particularly like how he walks through the history and culture of 3M, one of the most successful continually innovative companies in the world. He digs into the story behind the "convenient myth of Edison's genius" to illuminate what was really going on in Menlo Park. And he reminds us that innovation is ancient -- although we are often enamoured with the ingenuity of our own time.

One comment I like during the Q&A: "[the great innovative companies over time] tend to be those that find a way to balance the expense of innovation with long periods of pulling efficiency out of the previous innovation." 3M, IBM, GE, Microsoft and now Google.
